Pakistan has one of the world’s largest and most sophisticated gravity flow canal irrigation network. The network consists of 3 major reservoirs, 16 barrages and 44 canals. Seventy nine percent of the total irrigated land in the country depends on canal irrigation. Despite this extensive system, agricultural efficiency in Pakistan is only 35.5%. This means that 35.5 % of the water that reaches the fields is actually used by the crops. It is estimated that about 40 % of water is lost due to leakage, seepage, spillage and percolation in the century old unlined watercourses. more..
